A Simple Birthday Video for Someone Who Lives Far Away

When someone you love lives far away, birthdays can feel a little strange.

You send the text. You call when you can. Maybe you mail a card or a gift.

If there is a cake, a dinner, or a few people together, take a short video too. It gives them a chance to see the room, hear everyone’s voices, and feel included in a part of the day they would otherwise miss.

It does not need to be a big production.

Keep it short and honest

Before everyone gets distracted, have someone hold the phone and say something simple.

• “Happy birthday, Mom. We wish you were here.”
• “Look, we saved you a seat.”
• “The kids wanted to say happy birthday before we cut the cake.”

Then let the video be what it is. Someone singing too loudly. Kids talking over each other. A quick look at the cake. A little bit of normal family noise.

That is usually better than asking everyone to record separate, formal messages.

If you want to make it a little more personal

You can ask each person one easy question:

• What is your favorite memory with them?
• What do you hope they do this year?
• What is something they always say?
• What do you miss about having them nearby?

Keep the answers short. A few real sentences will mean more than a long video people feel nervous recording.

A message to send with it

That is enough. You do not have to explain it perfectly.
